Photonics Systems Engineer

We are seeking an enthusiastic engineer or scientist with experience in photonic systems development, to join our team in creating the next generation of liquid-crystal wavelength-selective optical switching technology. The role combines complex design problems with challenging practical implementation, in an exciting entrepreneurial context.

The role would suit an adaptable engineer with experience in the design, analysis and testing of free-space fibre-coupled optical systems. Optoelectronic and optomechanical skills would also be beneficial. Previously having taken a photonic product to market would be valued, as would familiarity with telecom or datacom switching networks.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers and physicists, and play a key role in the commercialisation of our world-leading optical switching technology.


  • Technical undergraduate degree (engineering, physics, computing, maths, etc.).
  • Photonic systems development.


  • Master’s or higher technical degree.
  • Zemax optical modelling.
  • Optoelectronics or optomechanics.
  • LabView or Python programing.
  • Commercialisation of a photonic product.
  • Knowledge of telecom or datacom switching networks.

Location: St John’s Innovation Centre, Cambridge.
Position type: Full time, permanent role.
Salary: Dependent on experience. The company has a share option incentive scheme.
